SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — What could be better than enjoying good food along a picturesque lake in a gorgeous park on a beautiful day?
“Nothing,” according to Greg Root, who is the manager at Saybrook Township Park, located at 5941 Lake Road W.
“We are now the only food service open during the day within five or six miles,” Root said. “We really saw a need to open a concession stand here with all of the people who live in the condos nearby, and the amount of families and ball teams who come and enjoy this beautiful park.”
Wendy Wright, a helper at the concession stand, not only loves greeting all the different people who come up to make an order, but also enjoys the atmosphere of the park.
“It is just fun being out here,” she said.
Libby McNeil who cooks up the mouth-watering cheeseburgers and onion rings feels the same way.
“I love talking with all the people,” she said.
What can park revelers expect to find on the concession menu?
Soft drinks, coffee, slushies, ice cream bars, assorted candies and potato chips, as well as cheeseburgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, nachos, popcorn, chicken nuggets and McNeil’s already-famous onion rings.
“Our prices are so reasonable; the most expensive item is the cheeseburger for $2.25,” McNeil said.
Regulars at the concession stand are the Saybrook Classic Cruisers, including Warren and Debby Sams, Pete and Mildred Romano, Luella Chamberlain, and Ken and Rose Hope.
“If it is a nice day, we stop in,” Warren Sams said as he was finishing up his onion rings.
“We are here every Monday evening for our classic car show,” he said. “Come on out and enjoy good food and great classic cars.”
The Saybrook Township Park concession stand hours are: lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., dinner from 5 p.m. to dusk. Open seven days a week. For more information, call the park office (440 964-9177).
