Shelly’s Wireless Solutions Plus canine specialty treats at Billi Bonz for the Pampered Pet By ELLEN KOLMAN - Staff Writer - ekolman@starbeacon.com Star Beacon ASHTABULA — Wireless communications and canine specialty treats are always in season at Shelly’s Wireless Solutions, owned by Shelly Mullen of Saybrook.
Mullen opened her Ashtabula Harbor store, located at 1018 Bridge St., in November 2001. “The cell phone is the wave of the future,” Mullen said. “Anything and everything will soon be done through a cell phone, including communications, financial transactions, locating people and places. Voice communication is declining, but data and pictures are skyrocketing.” While Verizon Wireless is Mullen’s main carrier, she also offers Page Plus Cellular. “At Wireless Solutions, I concentrate on cell phones and Smartphones and their accessories,” she said. A Smartphone combines Internet computer capabilities with cell phone functions. “The purpose of these technological advances boils down to ultimately people still want to talk to people, and that’s what they do: link people to people,” Mullen said. Mullen also sells hard-to-find accessories, at a discount, and air cards for laptop wireless connectivity. Used Verizon cell telephones are also available on consignment. Why visit Shelly’s Wireless Solutions instead of a kiosk or a big-box store? “(If it) were that easy, I would just put vending machines out front. People don’t realize what all they may or may not need in a phone. I have to know what areas people live in. One size does not fit all. Just because they see a phone advertised doesn’t mean that is the phone for them,” she said. “I try to offer a local personalized atmosphere, and I try to meet your individual communication needs. I don’t sell the cell phone of the day. I listen to you and try to figure out what phone will best meet your needs.” How did Mullen get into the wireless business? “I worked on the corporate side for three years; I was a marketing and data specialist.” Then an all-too-familiar scenario: Mullen’s company was bought out. She then decided to use her stock options, take the plunge and begin her own businesses. The Ashtabula Harbor store, located on Bridge Street, is in a prime tourist area and visible to foot traffic. While cell telephones can be terrific, they don’t always tempt a tourist doing some window shopping. That is where Mullen’s canine companion “Billi” became the inspiration for the store within the store: “Billi Bonz: For the Pampered Pet.”
