“You light up my life; You give me hope; To carry on; You light up my days and fill my nights with song.”
From the song You Light Up My Life, sung by Debbie Boone
GENEVA — Debbie Boone would feel right at home at The Light Touch Florist Shop located at 220 E. Main St.
“People sing me that song all the time,” said Darlene Light, manager and floral designer of the shop. “I don’t mind, I love my name.”
While the shop is owned by Doug Williams and Donna Light, Darlene runs the shop where the slogan is “The perfect choice for every occasion.”
“I started out as a delivery person in a florist shop in Parkman,” Darlene Light said. “While I was there I took advantage of every opportunity to learn and I had great on the job training. When my cousin from Geneva became ill I came here to help her and took over her shop for eight years.”
Light also credits different ladies over the years who taught her new techniques that enhanced her craft.
“I was always such a tom-boy and outdoor girl, so people are surprised when they see I can do this,” she said. “But, there is so much beauty in nature, so it becomes easy to be inspired.”
The Light Touch Florist Shop is a full service floral design business that can make any occasion special and memorable. Including: weddings, funerals, proms, anniversaries, birthdays and all holidays. Light works with silk and fresh flowers.
A special service Light provides is grave site urns.
“I really enjoy doing this for people,” she said. “I’ll even plant flowers on the grave site for people who cannot for whatever reason.”
Need something delivered? No problem. Light says if the customer pays for the delivery, she’ll go anywhere. She is currently hoping someone needs a delivery in the Bahamas.
Another specialty of Light is creative, original gift baskets.
“I do fruit, baby shower, bridal, birthday and my favorite — junk baskets,” Light said.
Did we say “junk” baskets?
“This is a basket full of chips, cookies, chocolates and everything a person would normally feel guilty about, but I do add an apple and orange to help ease the guilt,” she said.
“If you can think of it, I can do it,” Light said.
Light enjoys meeting new people and creating different things everyday.
“Working with my hands, sitting and visiting with my customers is such a pleasure for me. I follow the mantra of my mother, ‘no one is a stranger,’” she said.
Visit The Light Touch Florist Shop Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Or call at 440-466-0800.
