Police are seeking the driver of a vehicle that crashed on the South West Avenue Overpass on Monday evening after a pursuit, said Lt. Rodney Blaney of the Ashtabula Police Department.
Police were pursuing the vehicle after a citizen registered a complaint, Blaney said. He said any occupants of the car took off on foot before police could arrive and apprehend them.
The incident occurred between 9:30 and 9:40 p.m. and ended on the overpass where the vehicle, with Illinois license plates, hit a curb on the west side of the road, crossed the center line and hit the guard rail on the east side of the bridge.
Blaney said the entire incident was under investigation late Monday evening.
Two Ohio Highway Patrol cars blocked the north side of the overpass while a tow truck prepared to remove the severely damaged vehicle around 10 p.m. Several troopers, an Ashtabula Sheriff Department Deputy and Ashtabula Police officers walked the bridge looking for evidence.
