Suspect in murder goes to court

ASHTABULA — David W. Champlin, the Ashtabula man charged with felonious assault for allegedly slamming a man’s head to the ground Aug. 22, was bound over to the Ashtabula County grand jury Tuesday — but not before City Solicitor Michael Franklin untangled a web of surprising details.

The victim died eight days later in a hospital. The prosecution’s key witness, neighbor Jerry L. Jones, 3905 Station Ave., said that on Aug. 22, he heard Champlin holler, and then watched him cross Station Avenue and threaten the victim, 49-year-old Greg C. Attkisson, also known as Mississippi Mike.

“Mississippi Mike (Attkisson) said to Champlin, ‘I don’t want any trouble from you,’” Jones said. “Dave (Champlin) grabbed him and slammed him as hard as he could. His head hit the ground; it sounded like an egg cracking.” Jones was one of three witnesses Franklin called to testify for the state at Champlin’s preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Municipal Court.

At a preliminary hearing, a judge determines whether a crime was likely committed and whether reasonable evidence exists to show the accused likely committed the crime.
